This Photochromic Pigment set can be used to demonstrate and investigate light reactive Smart Materials.

The Kit contains:

  • A set of 3 x Photochromic Pigments (Purple, Orange and Magenta)
  • UV Fluid
  • Glow in the Dark Pigment

Photochromic Pigments:

These pigments normally have a pale, off-white appearance but in sunlight or UV light they instantly change to a bright, vivid colour. The pigments revert to their pale colour when away from sunlight or UV light.

  • Supplied in a plastic syringes containing 3g of pigment.

UV Fluid:

This liquid is non-toxic liquid paraffin containing a UV sensitive photochromic dye. Indoors it appears as a clear liquid but when exposed to natural light it immediately becomes coloured. This colour increases in intensity when exposed to direct sunlight. The colour change is reversible, although it takes about 60 seconds for the liquid to become clear again.

Makes a fantastic demonstration of photochromic phenomena. The same dye chemistry is used in photochromic lenses, special window glass etc. Photochromic cells, for quantitative measurements, can be made, by trapping a drop of the fluid between microscope slides or petri dishes. The material can be activated by UV.

  • Supplied as a 50ml pot.

Glow in The Dark Pigment:

This pigment absorbs and stores sufficient energy to give an afterglow lasting up to ten times longer than zinc sulphide phosphorescents. After exposure to natural or artificial light, it will glow practically all night.

The pigment can be mixed and applied with white acrylic paint. When the acrylic hardens, it effectively locks the pigment into a water–resistant film. It should be noted that the pigment is highly concentrated and only very small amounts are needed to produce glow–in–the–dark effects.

  • Supplied as a 5g pack in a clear plastic container.
  • A mixed selection of light reactive materials.
  • Cross applications in Science, Design Technology and Art classes
  • Key Stage 4 Chemistry - Structure and Bonding: Smart Materials & Their Properties.
  • Glow in the Dark pigment can be mixed with acrylic paint which locks the pigment in allowing surfaces to be painted.
  • UV Fluid can be enclosed between microscope slides for demonstration.
